What is it?

Wave21 is an integrated project at Eawag focusing on the supply of drinking water from surface waters. In this project, the relation between raw water parameters and treatment processes is being studied for a better understanding of the performance of processes and the drinking water quality.

Several factors are arising requiring extensive innovations in drinking water production. Among these factors, the enhanced drinking water quality requirements (regulations of EU and USEPA), the availability of innovative treatment technologies and the need for more efficient treatment scenarios are the most important. Furthermore, in Switzerland within the next 20-30 years, there is a need for renovation or restructuring of a large number of treatment plants.

WaVe 21 involves several groups at the EAWAG which are active in the field of drinking water. They cover internationally recognized basic research (disinfection, oxidation, adsorption etc.) as well as local application of technologies such as membranes, adsorption and (advanced) oxidation/disinfection processes.
